We at Gemini Sailing Tours have seen many of our customers undergo motion sickness and over the years, we have shared a number of tips and advice to help our customers beat motion sickness so they can enjoy their time with us. For those with motion sickness, Gemini Sailing Tours would like to share some of these tips again so we can help you beat motion sick whether in a car, train or boat.
Taking Control of Motion Sickness
One of the leading causes of motion sickness is due to the fact you’re not in the driver seat. Without being able to predict the direction you’re moving, the mind is off track which is why most experience dizziness. To help combat this so called lack of control, go into the front seat or to the front of the boat. Look deep into the horizon as this helps make your mind believe it is in control again because you see the direction in which you’re moving.
Don’t Eat a Heavy Meal Before Going on a Boat
If you know you’re taking a boat ride, or even a long car or train ride, avoid eating a heavy meal and avoid the consumption of alcohol. Typically, a full stomach or alcohol can make motion sickness worse by adding nausea. Eat light and something that is easy on your stomach.
Equalize Sensory Cues By Laying Down
Especially if you’re getting motion sickness on the sea, it helps to lie down. When you lie down it helps the sensory system realign. While you’re lying down, fix your gaze forward and avoid looking around too much.
Desensitize Yourself & Get Your Sea Legs!
If you know that you suffer from motion sickness or want to test to see if you have motion sick on a boat, expose yourself in small intervals at first. Slowly develop a sense of the motion of the waves. Stay longer and longer on the sea until you become accustomed to the motion, or in other words, get your sea legs.
Over the Counter Pills & Natural Treatment for Motion Sickness
Studies have shown that chewing ginger gum, or consuming ginger is a great way to combat motion sickness, as well as nausea. If you don’t have time to prepare when it comes to combating motion sickness, get some ginger gum or drink ginger tea or soda. If you need something a little bit more stronger, before leaving on your trip whether you’re planning to fly, drive, ride, or sail on a boat, get an over the counter medication that targets motion sickness. This way you know you can enjoy your time, especially if you are with us on a Gemini Sailing Tour.
